In divination, an anachitis, or anancitis,<ref name=rulandus>Template:Cite book</ref> meaning "stone of necessity"<ref>Template:Cite book</ref> is a stone used to call up spirits from water.<ref>Template:Cite book</ref> It was described as a type of diamond by Martin Ruland the Elder.<ref name=rulandus/>
The stone was used in classical antiquity by the Magi, being described by Pliny the Elder as one of their "dreadful lies".<ref>Template:Cite book</ref> Its use had fallen out of favour by the Middle Ages.<ref>Template:Cite book</ref>
