She is one of the first prominent LGBT relatives to promote a major political campaign in the United States.

BiographyEdit

Gephardt worked on her father's political campaigns as a child<ref name=":0">Template:Cite news</ref> in St. Louis, Missouri.<ref>Template:Cite news</ref> She later became a social worker<ref name=":0" /> after graduating from Northwestern University.<ref name=":1">Template:Cite news</ref> In her practice as a social worker, she helped abused and mentally ill women in Washington, D.C.<ref>Template:Cite news</ref> She married Marc Alan Leibole in 1997,<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":6">Template:Cite news</ref> a man she later called "my best friend", according to the Los Angeles Times.<ref name=":2">Template:Cite news</ref> In the early 2000s, she attended Washington University, where she met Amy Loder.<ref name=":3" />

Gephardt came out to her family as a lesbian in April 2001.<ref name=":0" /> She had fallen in love with another woman, Loder, while in graduate school<ref name=":2" /> at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work.<ref name="DS2" group="June 30, 2003">Template:Cite news</ref> She first came to public attention when NBC announced that she was gay. She had been married to Marc Alan Leibole<ref name=":6" /> for three years before she fell in love with a woman, and came out to her husband and to her father.
