'''Alphaeus''' ({{IPAc-en|æ|l|ˈ|f|iː|ə|s}}; {{Langx|grc|Ἀλφαῖος}}) is a man mentioned in the [[New Testament]]  seemingly as the father of two of the [[Apostles in the New Testament|Twelve Apostles]]: [[Saint Matthew|Matthew the Evangelist]]<ref name="Mark 2:14">Mark 2:14</ref> and [[James, son of Alphaeus]].<ref>Mark 3:18</ref><ref>Matthew 10:3</ref> However, Mark 2:14 in [[Codex Bezae]] uses the name Levi rather than Matthew. It is therefore highly probable that the Alphaeus in "James son of Alphaeus" and "Levi son of Alphaeus" are the same person.
