The story's main character, [[Lemuel Gulliver]], visits the land after the ship on which he is travelling is blown off course. As a result, he becomes separated from a party exploring the unknown land. In the second preface to the book, in 1727, Gulliver laments that the publisher misspelled the land's name, which Gulliver asserts is actually called '''Brobdingrag'''.<ref>{{cite web|title=A Letter From Captain Gulliver to His Cousin Sympson|url=http://www.classicreader.com/book/89/1/|access-date=2 June 2017}}</ref> The adjective ''Brobdingnagian'' has come to describe anything of colossal size.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/brobdingnagian |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160926144937/https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/brobdingnagian |url-status=dead |archive-date=26 September 2016 |work=Oxford Dictionaries |title=Brobdingnagian |access-date=11 May 2019}}</ref>
