{{Short description|Electronic communication monitor used by the FBI}} {{Global surveillance}} '''Carnivore''', later renamed '''DCS1000''', was a system implemented by the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation]] (FBI) that was designed to monitor email and electronic communications. It used a customizable [[packet sniffer]] that could monitor all of a target user's Internet traffic. Carnivore was implemented in October 1997. By 2005 it had been replaced with improved commercial software.<ref name=ap>{{cite news |url=http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,144809,00.html |title=FBI Ditches Carnivore Surveillance System |publisher=Foxnews.com |agency=Associated Press |date=2005-01-18 |access-date=2008-10-29 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060822025113/http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,144809,00.html |archive-date=2006-08-22 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
