He has appeared in many theater productions, films, and television shows since the 1960s. He is known for portraying [[Emmett Brown]] in the [[Back to the Future (franchise)|''Back to the Future'' trilogy]] (1985β1990) and [[Jim Ignatowski]] in the comedy series ''[[Taxi (TV series)|Taxi]]'' (1978β1983), for which he won two [[Emmy Award]]s.
