It is the 5th most populated municipality in the region.

It was founded as Villa Real in 1255 as a royal demesne town and enclave long surrounded by territory belonging to the [[Order of Calatrava|military order of Calatrava]]. Its history in the late middle ages was influenced by friction with the latter.
