The grounds are held in a perforated metal filter basket.<ref>{{cite web |title=About Coffee: Coffee percolator |url=http://www.araazzurro.ca/about_coffee.aspx#Coffee_percolator |year=2007 |publisher=Ara Azzurro |access-date=2008-01-09 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071226131437/http://www.araazzurro.ca/about_coffee.aspx#Coffee_percolator |archive-date=2007-12-26 |url-status=dead}}</ref> Coffee percolators once enjoyed great popularity but were supplanted in the early 1970s by automatic [[drip-brew]] [[coffeemaker]]s. Percolators often expose the grounds to higher temperatures than other brewing methods, and may recirculate already brewed coffee through the beans. As a result, coffee brewed with a percolator is particularly susceptible to overextraction. However, percolator enthusiasts maintain that the potential pitfalls of this brewing method can be eliminated by careful control of the brewing procedures.
