'''Consonant gradation''' is a type of [[consonant mutation]] (mostly [[lenition]] but also [[Assimilation (phonology)|assimilation]]) found in some [[Uralic languages]], more specifically in the [[Finnic languages|Finnic]], [[Sami languages|Samic]] and [[Samoyedic languages|Samoyedic]] branches. It originally arose as an [[allophonic]] [[alternation (linguistics)|alternation]] between [[Syllable#Open and closed|open and closed syllables]], but has become [[grammaticalization|grammaticalised]] due to changes in the syllable structure of the languages affected.
