The village was historically part of the [[West Riding of Yorkshire]] until 1974. It was then a part of the district of [[Selby District]] in [[North Yorkshire]] from 1974 until 1996. Copmanthorpe is bounded to the north by the [[A64 road|A64]], while the [[East Coast Main Line]] runs through its south-east periphery; to the west lies open countryside.
