He is the president of the [[Middle East Forum]], and publisher of its ''[[Middle East Quarterly]]'' journal. His writing focuses on [[American foreign policy]] and the Middle East as well as [[criticism of Islamism]]. After graduating with a doctorate from [[Harvard]] in 1978 and studying abroad, Pipes taught at universities including Harvard, [[University of Chicago|Chicago]], [[Pepperdine University|Pepperdine]], and the [[U.S. Naval War College]] on a short-term basis but never held a permanent academic position.<ref name ="Lockman" /> He then served as director of the [[Foreign Policy Research Institute]], before founding the Middle East Forum.
