It breeds on the prairie grasslands of the [[Midwestern United States]] and winters in Central America, northern Colombia, and northern Venezuela. It is the [[monotypic|only member]] of the [[genus]] '''''Spiza''''', though some sources list another supposedly [[extinct]] species (see below).
