Schultz's rackets were weakened by two [[Tax evasion in the United States|tax evasion]] trials led by [[United States Attorney]] [[Thomas E. Dewey|Thomas Dewey]], and also threatened by fellow mobster [[Lucky Luciano]].<ref name="five families book"/> Schultz asked [[The Commission (American Mafia)|the Commission]] for permission to kill Dewey, in an attempt to avert his conviction, which they refused.
