He was leader of the [[New Democratic Party]] (NDP) from 1975 to 1989, and a [[Member of Parliament (Canada)|member of Parliament]] from 1968 to 1990 and from 2004 to 2006. He led the NDP through four federal elections. He oversaw a period of growth for the party with its parliamentary representation rising from 17 to 43 seats as of the [[1988 Canadian federal election|1988 federal election]]. Broadbent also served as a vice-president of [[Socialist International]] from 1979 to 1989 and director of the [[International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development]] from 1990 to 1996. Returning to politics in the [[2004 Canadian federal election|2004 federal election]], he was elected to represent [[Ottawa Centre (federal electoral district)|Ottawa Centre]].
