He commanded an army during the final days of the Civil War, and was instrumental in forcing the surrender of [[Confederate States Army|Confederate]] General [[Robert E. Lee]]. He also designed [[Fort Sam Houston]]. He died in Havana, Cuba of [[yellow fever]].
