It is one of five languages descended from [[Old Norse#Old West Norse|Old West Norse]] spoken in the [[Middle Ages]]; the others include [[Nynorsk|Norwegian]], [[Icelandic language|Icelandic]], and the extinct [[Norn language|Norn]] and [[Greenlandic Norse]].
