It is located between [[Scarborough, North Yorkshire|Scarborough]] and [[Bridlington]] on Filey Bay. Although it was a [[fishing village]], it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort.

Filey was [[Historic counties of England|historically]] mainly within the [[East Riding of Yorkshire]], although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the [[North Riding of Yorkshire]].<ref>{{cite vob|name=Filey East Riding| url=https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/901| accessdate=6 June 2023}}</ref>  In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
