The MEL (for Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) began as the replacement for the [[Lincoln Y-block V8 engine]] for use in large passenger cars. These engines were produced in [[Lima, Ohio]] at Ford's [[Lima Engine]] plant. The MEL was in turn replaced by the [[Ford 385 engine|Ford 385 series engine]].
