Designed as a successor to the [[Ford Y-block engine]], it was first installed in the 1962 model year [[Ford Fairlane (Americas)|Ford Fairlane]] and [[Mercury Meteor]]. Originally produced with a displacement of {{cvt|221|cuin|L|1}}, it eventually increased to {{cvt|351|cuin|L|1}} with a taller deck height, but was most commonly sold (from 1968β2000) with a displacement of [[#302|302]] cubic inches (later marketed as the 5.0 L). The [[#289|289]] small block powered Shelby Mustangs to the [[Trans-Am Series]] manufacturers championship in 1965 and 1966, while the [[Ford Boss 302 engine|Boss 302]] version did the same in 1970. The engine won at the [[24 Hours of Le Mans]] twice; once in [[1968 24 Hours of Le Mans|1968]] and once in [[1969 24 Hours of Le Mans|1969]], both times in [[John Wyer#J. W. Automotive Engineering Ltd|JWAE]] [[Mirage (race car)|Mirages]]. Other wins came from engines installed in [[AC Cobra]]s and the [[Shelby Daytona]] coupe. The small-block was installed in several of Ford's product lines, including the [[Ford Mustang]], [[Mercury Cougar]], [[Ford Torino]], [[Ford Granada (North America)|Ford Granada]], [[Mercury Monarch]], [[Ford LTD (Americas)|Ford LTD]], [[Mercury Marquis]], [[Ford Maverick (1970β1977)|Ford Maverick]], and [[Ford F-150]] truck. For the 1991 model year, Ford began phasing in the [[Ford Modular engine|Modular V8 engine]] to replace the small-block, beginning in late 1990 with the [[Lincoln Town Car]] and continuing through the decade. The 2001 [[Ford Explorer]] SUV was the last North American installation of the engine, and [[Ford Australia]] used it through 2002 in the [[Ford Falcon (Australia)|Falcon]] and [[Ford Fairlane (Australia)|Fairlane]].
