The FSN was active between 1994 and 1997 targeting an initial number of 4,000 households with services that ranged from [[video-on-demand]] to ordering fast food using just the TV remote. At its time, it was dubbed the "most futuristic network introduced so far."<ref name="nyt">{{cite news |last=Andrews |first=Edmund L. |date=December 12, 1994 |title=''Time Warner's 'Time Machine' for Futuristic Video'' |url=https://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D03E3DC1E39F931A25751C1A962958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all |accessdate=May 3, 2010 |work=The New York Times}}</ref> The trial aimed to study how interactive services would work, as well as their costs and advertising capabilities.
