Covering 1,432 square kilometers and home to over 1.46 million residents (as of 2019), Fuqing is located about 45 km south of downtown Fuzhou.

Known as one of the key ancestral hometowns for Chinese emigrants, particularly in Southeast Asia and the United States, Fuqing has a vibrant overseas Chinese community and strong economic ties abroad. Domestically, the city is recognized for its robust private sector, industrial development zones, and role in regional transportation.
