They lie at {{Coord|26|15|N|55|16|E}} and {{Coord|26|14|N|55|08|E}}, respectively, some {{convert|12|km}} from each other and {{convert|20|km}} south of the Iranian island of [[Qeshm]]. Greater Tunb has a surface area of {{convert|10.3|km2|abbr=on}}. It is known for its red soil. There are conflicting descriptions about its population: While some sources state there are between a few dozen and a few hundred inhabitants,<ref name="Guive Mirfendereski">[http://www.iranian.com/GuiveMirfendereski/2001/May/Tonb/index.html Guive Mirfendereski]</ref> others describe the island as having no native civilian population.<ref>[http://www.parstimes.com/history/iran_uae_dispute.html Radio Free Europe]</ref> There is reported to be an Iranian garrison and naval station, an aircraft runway, a fish storage facility and a red-soil mine. Lesser Tunb has a surface of {{convert|2|km2|abbr=on}} and is uninhabited with the exception of a small airfield, harbour, and [[Trench warfare#Post-1945 to modern day|entrenched]] [[Iranian military]] unit.
