It contains one [[Extant taxon|extant]] [[species]], the [[wolverine]] (''G. gulo''), as well as several [[extinct]] ones. [[Fossil record|Fossil evidence]] suggests that this genus appeared in [[North America]] and later spread to [[Eurasia]] during the [[Pliocene]]. Diagnostic traits include a strongly reduced [[premolar|P2]], a robust [[premolar|P4]] with three roots, and upper [[molar teeth|molars]] smaller than in other [[Guloninae|gulonines]]. Overall, the teeth are [[adaptation (biology)|adapted]] for [[hypercarnivory]].<ref name=SamuelsBredehoeft2018/>
