The '''Internet Engineering Task Force''' ('''IETF''') is a [[standards organization]] for the [[Internet standard|Internet]] and is responsible for the [[technical standard]]s that make up the [[Internet protocol suite]] (TCP/IP).<ref name="ripe-ietf">{{Cite web|url=https://www.ripe.net/participate/internet-governance/internet-technical-community/ietf|title=Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)|website=[[RIPE Network Coordination Centre]]|date=August 10, 2012|access-date=2018-08-22|archive-date=November 1, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181101200227/https://www.ripe.net/participate/internet-governance/internet-technical-community/ietf|url-status=live}}</ref> It has no formal membership roster or requirements and all its participants are volunteers. Their work is usually funded by employers or other sponsors.

The IETF was initially supported by the [[federal government of the United States]] but since 1993 has operated under the auspices of the [[Internet Society]], a [[non-profit organization]] with local chapters around the world.
