It is the capital of the [[Departments of Haiti|department]] of [[Sud-Est (department)|Sud-Est]], 24 miles (39&nbsp;km) southwest of Port-au-Prince across the Tiburon Peninsula, and has an estimated population of 40,000, while the commune of Jacmel had a population of 137,966 at the 2003 Census. The town's name is derived from its indigenous [[Taíno people|Taíno]] name of ''Yaquimel''.
