He was the brother of [[Hugo Rahner]], also a Jesuit scholar. Before the [[Second Vatican Council]], Rahner worked alongside [[Yves Congar]], [[Henri de Lubac]], and [[Marie-Dominique Chenu]], theologians associated with the emerging school of theological thought known as [[Nouvelle théologie]].
