The adjective ''[[:wikt:errant|errant]]'' (meaning "wandering, roving") indicates how the knight-errant would wander the land in search of adventures to prove his [[chivalry|chivalric]] virtues, either in [[knight]]ly duels (''[[pas d'armes]]'') or in some other pursuit of [[courtly love]].
