This is a list of [[chess variant]]s. Many thousands of variants exist. The 2007 catalogue ''The Encyclopedia of Chess Variants'' estimates that there are well over 2,000, and many more were considered too trivial for inclusion in the catalogue.{{sfnp|Pritchard|2000|p=8|ps=: "Most published ones (but none described here), are, in truth, forgettable."}}
