The district covers most of the eastern portion of the state, including [[Idaho Falls, Idaho|Idaho Falls]], [[Pocatello, Idaho|Pocatello]], [[Sun Valley, Idaho|Sun Valley]], [[Twin Falls, Idaho|Twin Falls]] and the northern two-thirds of [[Boise, Idaho|Boise]]. A member of the [[Republican Party (United States)|Republican Party]], Simpson was first elected to public office in 1984, and was elected to the House in the [[1998 United States House of Representatives elections in Idaho|1998 elections]], succeeding [[Mike Crapo]]. He served as [[List of Speakers of the Idaho House of Representatives|Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives]] from 1992 to 1998.
