He inherited the leadership of the [[Sadrist Movement]] from [[Muhammad al-Sadr (jurist)|his father]],<ref>{{Cite book |publisher=Saqi |isbn=978-0-86356-883-1|last=Hroub |first=Khaled |title=Political Islam: Context Versus Ideology |date=28 May 2012}}</ref> and founded the now dissolved [[Mahdi Army]] militia in 2003 that resisted the [[Occupation of Iraq (2003–2011)|American occupation of Iraq]]. He also founded the [[Promised Day Brigade]] insurgent group after the dissolution of the Mahdi Army; both were backed by Iran. In 2014, he founded the [[Saraya al-Salam|Peace Companies]] militia and serves as its current head.
