The '''Mutopia Project''' is a volunteer-run effort to create a library of [[free content]] [[sheet music]], in a way similar to [[Project Gutenberg]]'s library of [[public domain]] books.  It started in 2000.<ref>Portal page at the [https://web.archive.org/web/20010123221500/http://www.mutopiaproject.org/index.html Internet Archive] Retrieved January 24, 2001.</ref>

The music is reproduced from old scores that are in the [[public domain]]. New scores are [[Music engraving#Computer music engraving|digitally typeset]] with [[LilyPond|GNU LilyPond]] and distributed in the following formats:
* [[Portable Document Format|PDF format]] in both [[Letter (paper size)|letter]] and [[A4 paper#A series|A4]] paper sizes for printing,
* [[Musical Instrument Digital Interface|MIDI]] for aural reproduction, and 
* [[LilyPond]] source code format.
