The current city of Paphos lies on the [[Mediterranean Sea|Mediterranean]] coast, about {{convert|50|km|-1|abbr=on}} west of Limassol (the biggest port on the island), both of which are connected by the [[A6 motorway (Cyprus)|A6 highway]]. [[Paphos International Airport]] is the country's second-largest airport, and is a gateway to western and southern Cyprus. The city has a [[subtropical]]-[[Mediterranean climate]], with the mildest temperatures on the island.

In 1980, Paphos was included on the [[UNESCO]] [[World Heritage List]] for its ancient architecture, mosaics, and ancient religious importance.<ref name = "unesco">{{cite web |url = http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/79 |title = Paphos |website = UNESCO World Heritage Centre |publisher = United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization |access-date = 30 May 2021}}</ref> It was selected as a [[European Capital of Culture]] for 2017 along with [[Aarhus]].
