It is located in the defunct [[Oulu (province)|province of Oulu]], which was split in two regions; Pyhäjoki is part of the [[Northern Ostrobothnia]] [[regions of Finland|region]]. It is located {{convert|102|km}} southwest of the [[Oulu|city of Oulu]].

The municipality is located on the [[Gulf of Bothnia]] at the mouth of the [[Pyhäjoki (river)|river Pyhäjoki]]. It has a population of {{formatnum: {{Data Finland municipality/population count|Pyhäjoki}}}} ({{#time: j F Y|{{Data Finland municipality/population count|sourcedate}} }})<ref name="population_count"/> and covers an area of {{convert|{{Data Finland municipality/total area|Pyhäjoki}}|km2}} of which {{convert|{{Data Finland municipality/waters area|Pyhäjoki}}|km2|abbr=on}} is water.<ref name="total_area"/> The [[population density]] is {{convert|{{Data Finland municipality/population density|Pyhäjoki|round=2}}|PD/km2}}. The municipality is unilingually [[Finnish language|Finnish]].

The subject of the [[coat of arms]] of Pyhäjoki refers to the large [[boulder]] of Hanhikivi ("[[Goose]] Rock") near the mouth of the Pyhäjoki river, which was considered by the [[Russians]] at the end of the 15th century as the landmark of the [[Treaty of Nöteborg]] from 1323; a [[crown]] and [[cross]] pattern is carved into the stone as a landmark. The coat of arms was designed by Olof Eriksson and approved by the Pyhäjoki Municipal Council at its meeting on June 18, 1965. [[Fennovoima]], a Finnish nuclear power company, plans to build a [[Hanhikivi Nuclear Power Plant|nuclear power plant at Hanhikivi]] in the municipality.
