He served in the [[House of Commons of Canada]] from 1997 to 2008, representing the [[Alberta]] riding of [[Edmonton Strathcona (federal electoral district)|Edmonton—Strathcona]] as a member of the [[Conservative Party of Canada|Conservative Party]]. He was the first Muslim elected to the Canadian Parliament.
