Between 1942 and 1977, Sullivan was claimed to have been struck by [[lightning]] on seven occasions, surviving all of them. For this reason, he gained the nicknames "Human Lightning Conductor" and "Human Lightning Rod". Sullivan is recognized by ''[[Guinness World Records]]'' as the person struck by lightning more recorded times than any other human being.<ref>{{cite book|last=Campbell|first=Ken|title=Guinness World Records 2001|publisher=Guinness World Record Ltd|year=2000|pages=[https://archive.org/details/guinnessworldrec00enfi/page/36 36]|isbn=978-0-85112-102-4|url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/guinnessworldrec00enfi/page/36}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Newman |first=Vicki |date=2023-01-26 |title=Incredible story of man who survived being struck by lightning SEVEN times |url=https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2023/1/incredible-story-of-man-who-survived-being-struck-by-lightning-seven-times-733932 |access-date=2023-10-12 |website=Guinness World Records}}</ref>
