He was head of the [[National Umma Party]] and [[Imam]] of the [[Ansar (Sudan)|Ansar]], a [[tariqa|Sufi order]] that pledges allegiance to [[Muhammad Ahmad]] (1844–1885), who claimed to be the [[Mahdi]], the messianic saviour of [[Islam]].
