With a surface area of approximately {{convert|4279|km2}}, it is the largest [[lake]] in Finland, and the [[List of largest lakes of Europe|fourth-largest natural freshwater lake in Europe]]. 

The name Saimaa likely comes from a [[Pre-Finno-Ugric substrate|non-Uralic, non-Indo European substrate]] language.
