He was the Conservative [[Member of the European Parliament]] (MEP) for [[Scotland (European Parliament constituency)|Scotland]] from [[1999 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom|1999]] to [[2014 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom|2014]] and chair and Vice Chair of the [[Committee on Fisheries]], and was also a member of the Executive of the [[Scottish Conservative Party|Scottish Conservative party]]. He was President of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with [[Iraq]] and President of the Friends of Free [[Iran]] Intergroup (FoFI).
