The Sultanate separated from the [[Sultanate of Deli]] after a dispute over the royal throne in 1720. Like other kingdoms on the east coast of [[Sumatra]], Serdang prospered due to the opening of [[tobacco]], [[rubber]] and [[oil palm]] plantations.
