It is about {{convert|80|mi|km}} long and {{convert|10|mi|km}} wide, extending from the mouth of the [[Stikine River]] to Iphigenia Bay on the [[Gulf of Alaska]], separating [[Mitkof Island]], [[Kupreanof Island]], and [[Kuiu Island]] on the north from [[Zarembo Island]] and [[Prince of Wales Island (Alaska)|Prince of Wales Island]] on the south.<ref name=gnis>{{gnis|1896836}} and {{gnis|1896835}} (two pages about the same feature)</ref> The fur trader William Brown was the first [[Europe]]an to visit the strait about 1793.
