Suzhounese is a dialect of [[Wu Chinese]], and was traditionally considered the Wu Chinese [[prestige dialect]]. Suzhounese has a large vowel inventory and it is relatively conservative in initials by preserving voiced consonants from [[Middle Chinese]].{{Citation needed|date=December 2019}}
