The line connects [[Bakersfield]] and the [[San Joaquin Valley]] to [[Mojave, California|Mojave]] in the [[Mojave Desert]]. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad was extended from Bakersfield.
