His studies of insects and shells, numerous contributions to scientific journals, and scientific expeditions to Florida, Georgia, the Rocky Mountains, Mexico, and elsewhere made him an internationally known [[naturalist]]. Say has been called the father of American descriptive entomology and American conchology.
