==Early life== Born in [[Inverness, Nova Scotia|Inverness]] on [[Nova Scotia]]'s [[Cape Breton Island]], MacEachen graduated from [[St. Francis Xavier University]], and lectured in [[economics]] for several years at the school. He was the son of Annie Gillies and Angus MacEachen, a coal miner from [[Inverness County, Nova Scotia]]. MacEachen's maternal grandfather immigrated to Cape Breton Island from [[Morar]], Scotland, in 1865.
