==History== In 1922 the first hospital in Niue opened in Alofi.<ref>{{cite book |title=Niue, a History of the Island |author= Terry Magaoa Chapman |publisher=University of the South Pacific |location=Suva |year=1982 |page=129 }}</ref><ref>{{cite news |url=https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19220907.2.109 |title=GALA DAY ON NIUE. |work=New Zealand Herald |page=9 |date=7 September 1922 |access-date=10 November 2024 |via=Papers Past}}</ref> In January 2004, Niue was hit by the fierce tropical storm [[Cyclone Heta]], which killed two people and did extensive damage to the entire island. Many of Alofi's buildings were destroyed, including the hospital. Government buildings were shifted to a less exposed site 3 km (β 2 mi) inland from the west coast,<ref>{{Cite web |title=Alofi {{!}} Encyclopedia.com |url=https://www.encyclopedia.com/reference/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/alofi |access-date=2023-09-03 |website=www.encyclopedia.com}}</ref> named Fonuakula, after the storm.<ref name=heta>[[#heta|East-West Center]]</ref> This site is within the village boundaries of Alofi South.
