He was a member of the [[Glasgow University Dialectic Society|Dialectic Society]] and the [[Glasgow University Conservative Association|Conservative Club]], and participated in [[Glasgow University Union]] inter-varsity debates. In 1971, he was chairman of the [[Federation of Conservative Students]].
