==Early life and education==
Lu was born in Tōen Town (now [[Taoyuan City]]), in northern Taiwan, during [[Taiwan under Japanese rule|Japanese rule]]. After graduating from [[Taipei First Girls' High School]], Lu studied law at the [[National Taiwan University]] (NTU). After graduating from NTU in 1967, she earned two [[Master of Laws]] (LL.M.) degrees: one from the [[University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign]] in comparative law in 1971, and another from [[Harvard Law School]], where she was a student of [[Jerome Cohen]], in 1978.
