== Toponymy ==
Apure state derives its name from the [[Apure River]], which runs through the state. The river was known by that name in Spanish no later than the 1648 works of friar [[Jacinto de Carvajal]]. The source of the name of the river is less certain, with theories attributing it to the name of a local shrub or to a local indigenous chieftain named Apur.{{cn|date=December 2022}}
