==History== [[Backwell Hillfort]] between [[Flax Bourton]] and Backwell is an [[Iron Age]] hill fort.<ref>{{cite web|title=Backwell Hillfort|url=http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=25046|work=Hillfort in England in Somerset|publisher=Megalithic Portal|access-date=15 January 2011}}</ref> The village has a long history, appearing in the [[Domesday Book]] in 1086 with the name 'Bacoile' meaning 'The well back on the hill'. The parish was part of the [[Hundred (county subdivision)|hundred]] of [[Hartcliffe (hundred)|Hartcliffe]].<ref name=genuki>{{cite web|title=Somerset Hundreds|url=http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Miscellaneous/|publisher=GENUKI|access-date=9 October 2011}}</ref> The [[Lord of the manor|lords of the manor]] from the 12th to 17th centuries were the Rodneys. Walter de Rodney was given the manor for his support of the [[Empress Matilda]] against [[Stephen of England|King Stephen]].<ref name="dunning">{{cite book|last=Dunning|first=Robert|title=Somerset & Avon|year=1980|publisher=Bartholomew|isbn=0-7028-8380-8|pages=30}}</ref> [[Backwell House]] is an historic house in the village which was operated as a [[boutique hotel]] between 2016 and 2022.
