==Club career== Vogts joined the boys' football team of local sports club VfR Büttgen in 1954, at the age of seven, staying with them until his transfer in 1965 to [[Borussia Mönchengladbach]]. A [[Defender (association football)#Full-back|right back]], his tenacity earned him the nickname "Der Terrier".<ref>{{cite web | url = https://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/news/newsid=564181.html | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20070816150228/http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/news/newsid=564181.html | url-status = dead | archive-date = 16 August 2007 | title = Vogts: Africans can reach semis | access-date =3 May 2009 | date = 6 August 2007 | work = fifa.com}}</ref> He was one of the key players, along with [[Rainer Bonhof]], [[Herbert Wimmer]], [[Uli Stielike]], [[Allan Simonsen]] and [[Jupp Heynckes]], during Borussia's golden years in the 1970s, when it won the [[Bundesliga]] five times, the [[DFB-Pokal|German Cup]] once, and the [[UEFA Europa League|UEFA Cup]] twice. Vogts remained with Mönchengladbach, until he retired from playing in 1979.
